The visuals of the movie work best, however, when they are in conjunction with the film’s thunderous hip-hop/rap soundtrack, which serves as the movie’s backbone.

Oza’s compositions are equally delightful- try not to smile at the beautifully composed shot of a young couple jamming out to music together in the back of a crowded bus. His work provides us with an immersive and perceptive look into modern-day Mumbai, capturing the stark divisions within the city (and perhaps the entire country), from the compact Dharavi slums to the scintillating clubs that illuminate the city’s nightlife. Jay Oza’s cinematography helps in bringing the world and characters of the film to life. Despite the film’s narrative parallels to earlier movies like Rang De Basanti, Rock On!, and Secret Superstar, Akthar’s vision is wholly unique and energized by its crackling, star-studded performances. This is richly textured, well-realized, and passionate storytelling that brings the audience into a cinematic experience that will stick with them long after the credits have rolled. Akthar’s deliberate direction and the ensemble cast’s sublime performances help bring this story to life in a way that is genuinely unforgettable. Yet, surprisingly, the novelty of seeing the story of an Indian rapper is hardly the most astonishing part of this film – it’s actually the immaculate execution and performances that come with it. Zoya Akthar’s Gully Boy represents yet another landmark feat for this new era.

It would be an understatement to say that the quality of films has grown progressively better – such an assertion would be a terrible disservice to the new generation of filmmakers who have completely revitalized the identity of the country’s cinematic landscape. Looking back at the Indian films I have seen in my lifetime, it is staggering to see the evolution of content onscreen. The reviews are being published in no particular ranking/order.
